South Africa's women bowlers produced a Mother's Day special as the singles and the fours got underway on Sunday in the Atlantic Rim tournament at the Wanderers in Johannesburg.
In the morning singles, KZN's Helen Grundlingh played the game of her life to beat Ireland's hot-shot Jennifer Dowds 21-8 and after lunch, in the first round of the fours, Pam Landau, Susan Nel, Sylvia Burns and Jennifer Jones turned on the magic to beat Israel, skipped by Tamar Kamzel, 21-11.
"A pretty good start," said SA coach Jessica Henderson.
"Helen was sensational in the singles. We thought beforehand that it would be a close game, but she played extremely well and put her opponent under pressure from the word go.

"Then in the fours in the afternoon the girls consolidated and everyone played their part just perfectly.
"You could say it was a Mother's Day special because four of the five team members are mothers. Jenny's the only exception, but she's mother to a cat. And it was her birthday so it was a big day for her too."
South Africa are in Section One in the singles in this 16-nation tournament, and Grundlingh's next opponent on Monday is young Brazilian, Juliana McDonnell, while round two is a bye for the Proteas four.
The SA men met with mixed fortunes yesterday, with Gerry Baker losing 21-7 to 19-year-old English star Sam Tolchard in the morning, before hitting back to edge out Jersey's Frankie Alan Shaw 21-19 in a ding-dong post-lunch battle.
Tolchard lost out in the afternoon though, going down 21-20 to Namibia's giantkilling Johan Jacobs, who had lost to Shaw in the morning.
In the fours, Bobby Donnelly, Wayne Perry, Johann du Plessis and Stuart Milligan came up against an Ireland four who played well in the morning to defeat the hosts 24-13.
But the intensity was back in the afternoon as they never looked in trouble in beating Canada 27-10.
