Convicted fraudster Schabir Shaik has been released on medical parole, reportedly because he is "gravely ill".

IOL asked readers: "Was Schabir Shaik's release from prison fair?"

Of the 846 people who voted in the poll, 11 percent (89 votes) said "Yes"; 76 percent (642 votes) said "No"; and 14 percent (115 votes) said "Who cares?"

Some reader comments:

  • Sonny: Until more credible details have been released, I suspect something fishy has been going on with his release. Perhaps money under the counter? I predict he will make a miraculous recovery after the election in April and that he will then be pardoned by the new president of the country, after all, he is owned one by the president to be.You cannot trust anything where some members of the ruling party are connected with or have a shady finger in the pie, most are corrupt anyway.

  • Richard: Shaik entered prison fit and well and with a smiling face. The second day he suddenly became ill and spent his time in hospital. Now he gets stretchered out back home, a free man . Whats the secret regarding his health, if he is so "gravely" ill ?? Or is this just another above the law incident because of high profile connections.

  • J Ross: The law is very clear with regards to medical parole. The prisoner MUST be in the LAST stages of a TERMINAL illness. That means he only qualifies if he WILL die within a month.Being gravely ill does not qualify. This case must be sent to the parole review board as it smacks of corruption. 3 doctors said he was gravely ill but NONE of them have said he is terminally ill which is the requirement by law. Apart from that it is easy to buy doctors that will write whatever you want on the letter. This is yet another indication, along with Zuma promising him a pardon, of where our beautiful country is heading.
