Bangkok - Norway has retained its status as the world's most desirable country to live in, according to UN data released on Monday, which ranks sub-Saharan African states afflicted by war and HIV and Aids as the least attractive places.

Data collected prior to the global economic crisis showed people in Norway, Australia and Iceland had the best living standards, while Niger, Afghanistan and Sierra Leone scored worst in terms of human development.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) index was compiled using 2007 data on GDP per capita, education, and life expectancy, and showed marked differences between the developed and developing world.

"Despite significant improvements over time, progress has been uneven," UNDP said in a statement.

"Many countries have experienced setbacks over recent decades, in the face of economic downturns, conflict-related crises and the HIV and Aids epidemic, and this was even before the impact of the global economic crisis was felt."

Life expectancy in Niger was 50, about 30 years shorter than Norway, according to the index. For every dollar earned per person in Niger, $85 was earned in Norway.

Half the people in the poorest 24 countries were illiterate, compared to 20 percent in nations classed as having medium levels of human development, the index showed.

Japanese people lived longer than others, to 82.7 years on average, with life expectancy in war-ravaged Afghanistan just 43.6 years.

Liechtenstein has the highest GDP per capita at $85,383 in a tiny principality home to 35 000 people, 15 banks and more than 100 wealth management companies.

People were poorest in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where average income per person was $298 per year.

Five countries - China, Venezuela, Peru, Colombia and France - climbed three or more places from the previous year, driven by greater earnings and longer life expectancy. China, Colombia and Venezuela also scored better due to improvements in education.

UNDP, which has published the index annually since 1990, said human development had improved globally by 15 percent since 1980, with China, Iran and Nepal the biggest climbers in the chart.

  • South Africa was 129 on the list

As countries go, South Africa has the climate, the almost indescribable beauty, the diversity of Fauna and flora and the infrastructure to be the most desirable place to live on this planet. However, It has fallen under the control of people who have, in the whole history of mankind, never produced anything of any value to the world when it comes to technological development of any nature. They are not city-builders or transport or infrastructure builders or maintainers of anything that requires a strict sense of caring, responsibility, or punctuality in whatever they are supposed to be truly dedicated to. They are also pathetic when it comes to the type of agriculture required to feed the nation, and are extremely addicted to wanting, in fact, demanding all the luxuries in life that they are totally incapable of producing themselves. Their lazy, African-inherited come day go day God send Sunday attitude to life means, simply, tomorrow is another day, "Let us eat, drink and make merry as long as the sun keeps shining in our Sunny South Africa. And when the money runs out, we'll just keep increasing the taxes and the economic cover-ups. Economic empowerment of the masses of any form seems to be tolerated, so corruption and serious crime is rampant because of the pathetic attitude and ability and drive to actually get off their thrones and to do something really meaningful about it. The real, truly qualified and enthusiastic people who can and will get the task of getting things back into shape done, are not represented in the governing body; so things, quite frankly, look pretty damned bleak; and the soccer world cup is not going to contribute to getting the failing system back to where it was in the wonderful, good-old-days. The whole South African Nation needs to catch a serious, rapid and honest wake up to the truth or we will very soon be at the bottom of the list of desirable countries to live in on this planet. Only the acceptance of and responding to the truth and what it requires of all of us to do will save our country and set us free indeed. We cannot keep pretending that everything is just fine, because it is definitely not, and time is running out fast. Let us all put our shoulders to the wheels and get our wagons out of the drifts, because the storm waters are on the way. I have written this comment in truth, because, in truth, I love this country and all its people and would want for all of them to prosper in truth.

Such drivel is published by people who have nothing to do except compare countries and judge them. How can you compare Afghanistan, DRC, Ethopia to Norway, Scotland and France? Only crazy people do that.
