Weekend Argus executive editor Janet Heard has become the 13th South African woman to receive the Nieman Fellowship, it was announced on Tuesday.
Heard's fellowship comes 21 years after her father, former Cape Times editor Anthony Heard, went on the same fellowship to Harvard University, said Nieman Society of Southern Africa chairperson Pippa Green.
"Heard intends to study the politics of post-liberation societies, focusing on how parties struggle to maintain democratic principles and a moral compass after achieving power, as well as African history and politics," said Green.
The 44-year-old will be the 55th South African Nieman fellow since 1961.
She joins the ranks of the press ombudsman, Joe Thloloe, Rapport editor Tim du Plessis, former SABC chief executive Zwelakhe Sisulu, Naspers chairman Ton Vosloo and former City Press editor Mathatha Tsedu.

"Heard has been described by her colleagues as a dedicated and driven news editor who has inspired excellence in her team and set high standards in local journalism. Several reporters have won journalism awards under her direction," Green said.
