Cricket South Africa have appointed IFM Sports Marketing Surveys South Africa to look at possible reasons behind poor attendances at the opening International matches against England.

Bidvest Wanderers Stadium attracted 16 600 spectators for the 1st Standard Bank International Pro20 match, while 7 934 spectators attended SuperSport Park in Centurion where South Africa won the second Pro20 in record-breaking fashion to draw the series 1-1 all with England.

Cricket South Africa CEO Gerald Majola said: "We like hearing from the fans. The last fan survey we ran provided some interesting insights, some of which we have already followed up on.

"People asked for more information so we launched our Facebook and Twitter platforms which have been extremely popular and has dramatically improved our interactions with fans.

'The Proteas deserve to play in front of capacity crowds'
"The Proteas deserve to play in front of capacity crowds and we will do our utmost to rally the nation to show 100% South African support to Graeme Smith and his charges."

Marc Jury, managing director of IFM, said: "Through our research across different sporting codes we have always encountered the response that the 'energy and atmosphere' of live sporting events is a critical element in drawing supporters to the ground.

"Something that is evident is the live experience has not kept pace with the ease and comfort of the 'TV product' and thus people often choose to watch from their living rooms instead of Row F.

"Too often rights holders make decisions based on gut-feel and not by listening to what their fans want.

"CSA are taking a proactive approach to ensure the likes of Smith, Pietersen, Strauss and co will be playing in front of full stadiums for the rest of the summer."

The survey includes face-to-face, as well as online research on the CSA website

Researchers were at OR Tambo International Airport on Friday and at the second MTN One Day International at SuperSport on Sunday gathering data. The online survey will go live shortly. - Sapa

The team and the amount of cricket being showcased need to be reveiwed. I am sorry but Greame has not led the team to any tournament wins and its time for guys like Boucher and Kallis to move on in life now. We need to also look at the scheduled amount of cricket being showcased, the IPL is already in Financial b*ll*cks due to decrease in demand. The only thing keeping be coming back to Newlands is the BEER!!! (Edited by IOL)

Because they suck, the coach and clique (Smith, Boucher, Kallis, DeVilliers) are so filled with their self worth (trophyless that is) that there is no room left in the stadium for the fans...to many big egos...

Johan Botha is a much better captain than Graeme Smith. Arthur likes Smith too much and fails to notice all his faults. Smith is not a good captain at all

Oh please. Just to show how NOT serious the CSA is about this, if you can find this phantom survey on their website you are a better person than me. The Proteas have also become a team that promises the world but doesn't deliver. Time for Smith to be replaced.

I support winners. The proteas aren't. Graeme smith has led SA for too long, unsuccessfully. Sure we had the 1 position, for a few weeks, not good enough. We have not won a single tournament under him (I think its six tournaments now). How come he is still captain? There is no accountability for people like smith. I pay to see winning teams, not arrogant big mouths with huge egos that talk the talk but can't match it with the walk. I won't pay to see the proteas, hopefully we get a new captain soon who will take away the choker tag that smith has put round the proteas neck.

Why was Loots Bosman not selected after a thrilling and captivating performance in T20s? Arthur is quick to talk about players being drafted into the team on merit. It's high time Arthur leaves and Smith should stand up and deliver too. Why is Amla being the fall guy always? He has a better average than both AB & JP.
Even Windies will beat the current Proteas now.

The Proteas are the most overrated team in the world. They embody the dour, conservative, thoughtless, planless, pathetic societal landscape of South Africa. Anything but excitement happens there or within the team. The players haven't got a cookin' clue about thinking on their feet and how to be innovative DURING the game.

Many players in the Proteas team are so clueless that they haven't understood that the modern game is played with intense video surveillance by the opposite teams. This means that a guy like JP Duminy, after his exploits in Australia, has been caught out and neutralised in in no uncertain terms after simple study of video coverage of him. JP Duminy is now firmly on course to become a typical 30's or at best 40's scoring SA batsmen, completely lacking in flair and innovation.

Who in his right mind wants to spend hundreds of rands in a tight economic climate on a bunch of losers?
