Patrons and staff at the casino of the Wild Coast Sun Hotel and Resort near Port Edward were left shocked after an attempted armed robbery on Sunday.
Wild Coast Sun General Manager Alec McMath said five armed men had entered the casino just before 1am. Staff and patrons had been told to lie on the floor while two men had tried in vain to break into the cash desk. The men then fled.
"On exiting, the gang encountered a member of the resort's armed response unit and shots were exchanged. No patrons or staff were hurt," he said.

About R15 000 had been stolen from the woman who was hosting the trip.
Govender said he was unhappy with the treatment that patrons had received from the management and security staff.
"A police officer came with a pen, but not a piece of paper. He wrote down our numbers and said he would get back to us, but he hasn't yet," he said.
McMath said resort security and police had attended the scene immediately, but no arrests had been made.
