The ANC has a clear New Year's resolution: drum up support for the upcoming elections. On Thursday, the party flew a giant flag with a picture of party president Jacob Zuma, with the message: "Happy New Year - Remember... Vote ANC", along Durban's coastline.

Holidaymakers on the beaches revelled as the helicopter, pulling the flag, circled several times before heading further down the coast.

The ANC's KwaZulu-Natal deputy secretary, Sihle Zikalala, said the first day of the new year was an important date.

"The ANC would like to wish everyone a happy and prosperous New Year, but also to remind the people that those who don't have identification documents, or are not registered to vote, should get their documents and register."

He said the banner was a direct message from Zuma that 2009 was crucial for the party.

Zikalala said the flag was part of a big campaign to reach out to people. "The ANC has volunteers on all the beaches interacting with people. Every day during the festive period we will be finding means to involve people with the ANC."
