Nando's wants a lot of change for its "Julius" puppet.
And that's bad news for the man who offered Z$1, another who bid two Chappies and a third who suggested that Nando's pay him to take it off their hands.
There are others who realise that the infamous puppet from the TV advert is worth a great deal more than the R5 that Nando's initially suggested they would get for him.
'I'll have a mini-Julius for R1.99, and I'm paying with R100 so I can get more change'
As soon as Tuesday's story appeared about the auction of "Julius" for charity through The Star, hundreds of readers made their bid. Continues Below ↓
Most were willing to dish out between R50 and R500 for the celebrity doll, but many were just playing around.
"I'll have a mini-Julius for R1.99, and I'm paying with R100 so I can get more change," wrote one reader.
Nando's will give the money raised from the auction to the Self-Help Development Organisation, which empowers young men by enabling them to finish matric and learn mechanics, electrical engineering and woodwork skills.
Nando's marketing manager Sylvester Chauke said he hoped "Julius" would raise at least R100 000 for the charity. "We don't want to just give him away for nothing. He is a very prized possession indeed and we've become quite attached to him."
To bid for Julius, SMS 32546 and state the figure you are offering.
Bidding ends on Wednesday at midnight. The best bid will be published in The Star and on IOL.

Further to Jabu Pule's ridiculous comment (scroll down, it's worth the laugh!): Saying "Yes" to ANC does NOT imply saying "Yes" to Malema.
Thank you Star, for supporting Nandos and its hilarious campaign. For that, I will also place my bid: whatever change I can get from a chicken burger meal! (plus a mielie).
PS I will pay with a R50 note, right??

I, too, wish I were Julius. He rocks.
He is not afraid to say what he wants to say. Besides, Helen Zille spends most of her time attacking the ANC, so what should Julius do? attack the DA!!! of course

Nando's did the advert about malema because they knew that people like him, i can not blame them because if you want to catch the fish with net, you have to put worms so they can come for their food, thats my example, and if you want to catch the chickens you must have maize, thats the way of attracting customers,. Nando's have used the right person indeed!

Jabu, Malema is bigger than Nandos. Their operating profit is 1.6 billion a year. they are one of the biggest chains in the UK, South Africa, Australia. I have eaten Nandos in Malaysia, Israel and Singapore. I think He ma be just a bit smaller. Oh and ask nandos to include you in their marketing budget I'm sure your e-mail is going to make a lot of people start craving "half chicken, chips & a coke"

Julius fell right into Nandos trap. Making an issue out of this created more awaress about Nandos while making a joke about himself. i.e the ad. was aired million times and yet i never took notice of the script but soon as there was noise about it thats when i started surfing the net want to listen to it. DAaaH!! should hav just ignored it twasnt gonna last.

Jabu... too bad more than 11 million people are blind. Oh and the "Nandos stay away campaign". Just ridiculous. I'm not going to stay away from Nando's because you found their ad offensive. The entire ANCYL should grow a pair, and stop crying like little babies who had their sweet taken away from them.
