The African National Congress Youth League would not allow former president Thabo Mbeki to be charged with genocide, ANCYL chief Julius Malema said on Monday.

This comes after Young Communist League national secretary Buti Manamela said Mbeki and former health minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang had denied many HIV-positive people access to anti-retroviral drugs while they were in government.

Manamela made a call for the two of them to be charged with genocide.

"We must never surrender our leaders," said Malema at a gala dinner of the Pan African Youth Union at Emperor's Palace in Boksburg on Monday evening.

"Thabo Mbeki might have made mistakes, but we can never charge him.

"We must not charge one of our own. If we allow that, the same thing would happen to [Zimbabwean President Robert] Mugabe, and the same would happen to Zuma, and the next thing you know they will come for you," Malema said. - Sapa

Little knowledge is very dangerous. People are saying things they have no idea about. I'm really interested in the evidence that suggest and prove that the former President and Minister of Health were responsible for denying people ARVs. I will really sleep at night once this evidence is revealed.

South Africans are allergic to facts. Instead of facing facts they are pointing fingers at the wrong people. We are being told that the statistics are bleak because of the past administration. As I recall that past administration was the one that enabled the biggest roll out of ARVs in the world. And that SANAC was revamped in 2007 adopting a new HIV and AIDS national strategic plan 2007-2011 aimed at fighting the scourge, with contributions from all relevant stakeholders. No one however is pointing at pharmaceuticals and their patent protection as reasons for late ARVs roll out. What I'm trying to say here is there were a number of reasons that contributed to the late roll out of ARVs to the people and no one is highlighting these facts. And that, unlike what is being widely reported, the past administration did its part in the fight against HIV & AIDS. Even God knows that. The reason why there is little change in the statistics I believe is because of our behaviour. As I write this message thousands of South African teenagers are pregnant aware of the risks of having unprotected sexual intercourse. Thousands of Souh Africans are involved in extramarital affairs. I can go on and on on these desturbing behaviours. People can continue flattering themselves with cheap politics but who are they trying to fool. The government has been doing well in distributing ARVs amid limited resources. The onus is on us the people to support the government in the fight against HIV & AIDS. No ARVs will ever cure anyone nor prevent anyone from getting HIV unless our behaviour changes. Ask Uganda, Cuba, China about their successes in reducing HIV infection rate in their respective countries.

what appears to be the reality is that, it is not about those who suffered the consequences but it is a direct assassination to the former president by the ycl, i wonder what mbeki did to manamela, whatever it is! but vengeance can not be justified in the name of genocide.

Who is Buti Manamela in the South African Political Arena, where does he come from anyway? What does he know about genocide? What background does he have on science? Who has ever proven in his life Scientifically that a Virus causes a syndrome, in which journal article was that ever published. We don't need leaders who just wake up and open their big mouths with no understanding at all of the basis of their utterances.

What is it that Buti is trying to prove or is he trying to compete with Julius in the public arena for more space. The whole bunch of Mbeki's cabinet during his time as well as ANC NEC members including JZ who where there and never raised objections to Mbeki's foolish phiolosophy on AIDS.

Manamela should come up with something new that will improve living conditions of all South Africans. He should be updating us on what is happening with the call that was made by communist that Banks Housing Bond Loans are exploiting our people. What are they doing about that campaign or they have failed to pursue it further. It is true that Mr Mbeki is our former president who has led this country with distinction. If he has failed or killed children with HIV/aids the blame should be taken by all who have been in power prior the current administration. Let us not set trends that we will not be able to maintain. May b its Manamela's personal vendetta against Mr Mbeki. I agree with ANC youth league president that let us not try to wipe out the History of ANC by burying Thabo Mbeki alive by putting all the negative things that had happened during his administration. This will not happen even to our current ANC president we need to protect our leaders even if we differ with them at some issues. Let us not use media to fight our personal battles.

Why did IOL cut off the rest of the article that is printed in the MG? Malema goes on to say some ridiculously racist things as usual which puts his statements in a much more different light. On his note, mugabe should be charged anyway.

@ Peter T. I fully agree with what you are saying. The ICC perhaps do not have the necessary powers or they are very selective. Not forgetting the actions of the various Israeli prime ministers.
