Dublin - Ireland flanker Alan Quinlan will miss the British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa after receiving a 12-week ban from all competitions, Heineken Cup organisers said on Wednesday.

Quinlan was cited for making contact with the eye of Leinster's Leo Cullen in holders Munster's 25-6 Heineken Cup semifinal defeat this month and will be suspended until September 9.

The 34-year-old blindslide flanker, who has won 27 caps for Ireland but did not feature in this year's grand slam-winning side, was a surprise selection in Ian McGeechan's Lions squad for the tour beginning on May 30.

The Lions have already lost scrumhalf Tomas O'Leary and Wales centre Tom Shanklin to injury.

Scotland's Mike Blair has replaced Quinlan's Munster team mate O'Leary but McGeechan has yet to name a replacement for Shanklin.

England's Tom Croft is favourite to take Quinlan's place in the 37-man squad.
