The Premier Soccer League scored a big own goal with the media before Saturday's Absa Premiership Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at Ellis Park.
Due to renovations for July's Confederations Cup, journalists were instructed to park their cars at Wits University in Milpark and catch a bus laid on by the PSL to the stadium.
It sounded fine in theory but the PSL and Wits University bungled the afternoon. The security guard caused unnecessary problems by diverting media to other entrances and refused to allow media to enter where they were supposed to. The PSL blamed Wits for changing the plan on Saturday but they forget to tell the media.
It was a poor show and bad organisation. At the end of the day the PSL must take responsibility. It was their plan that went badly wrong.
With the Confederations Cup here in two months time and the World Cup just over a year away this shows that much has still to be done by local officials to avoid an organisational disaster. It time for local soccer officials to wake up and sort these problems out before it is too late.
Pirates won and exciting Derby 2-1. And thankfully the bus taking the media back to Wits arrived at Ellis Park on time without any more problems. - Sapa
