The government plans to introduce harsher laws against smokers. This law would see increased penalties for restuarant owners and adults who smoke in the presence of children
Most IOL readers thought that the new laws would not be enough to deter smokers.
IOL asked its readers: Will the new smoking law deter people from smoking?
Of the 685 people who participated in the 83 percent (566 votes) said "No", and 17 percent (119 votes) said "Yes".

Susan: Why are the smokers always being 'persecuted'?? I've never smoked and find that the worst anti-smokers are reformed smokers:-) Government can do a lot more service to the population by regulating sales of alcohol! Imbibers cause far more damage .. drunken behaviour, brawls, car crashes.

Kevin: Smoking is an addiction, no laws will prevent people from smoking. The present laws on smoking are not enforced by the local authorities or the police so why will new laws change this
G*tvol: Nothing or NO ONE will make me stop smoking - ESPECIALLY not this so called goverment which is apparently caring for this country. And is bullsh*tting us around every corner !!!!
Doris: im a smoker but not with kids in the car or anywhere where there are people who dont smoke if i go where people dont smoke then i dont smoke so whats the big deal target people who drink an drive an cause death on the roads
MM:
As an ex-smoker i can say the following. It does stink, it is a bad habit and it does affect everyone around you. On the other hand one does have the right to choose, however i do agree with a no-smoking policy in public area's ie restuarants etc. A big problem is throwing stompies from the car! And if you have any doubt about it, please check almost any smokers ashtray in their car, the cleanest area in the car because most just toss it out the window............
Will:
2 out of 20 adults smoke.
