'Tis the season to be merry... or maybe not for the many traffic officers in KwaZulu-Natal, who face uncertainty about overtime pay for the festive season.
Traffic officers in the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) have been informed that there is not enough money, because of budget cuts, to pay them for the extra work needed for the festive season.
Road safety activists fear this could offset the gains made by the province in reducing the number of deaths on KZN's roads.
According to the latest available figures (2003), RTI officers worked 21 004 hours over the festive season alone.
In the 2006/07 festive season 353 people were killed in road crashes and 290 lost their lives in the same period in 07/08.
