The R21/R24 freeway linking Pretoria with the OR Tambo International Airport was renamed to the Albertina Sisulu Freeway on Thursday.

Speaking at the renaming ceremony next to the freeway, Transport Minister Jeff Radebe said it was fitting to celebrate leaders and icons by naming prominent places after them.

"The naming of prominent places after our heroes and heroines gives the present and future generations a better understanding and knowledge about those who fought for their freedom," Radebe said.

Sisulu, who was present at the renaming ceremony, was the wife of former ANC leader Walter Sisulu, she was also a struggle leader in own right fighting for women's rights.

"We shall not have erred therefore, and in fact are honoured ourselves, to bestow upon her the honour of naming the R21/R24 after her. You are a symbol, a quest and an inspiration for our further development as a young South African nation," Radebe said. - Sapa
