A cash-van security guard has been shot dead during a cash heist in Umvoti, KwaZulu-Natal.

Police Captain Khephu Ndlovu said security guards from G4 Security had been collecting a shop's weekend takings on Monday morning when seven armed men dressed as construction workers had approached them.

"As the security guard was leaving the shop carrying a cash box he was surrounded by seven armed men," said Ndlovu.

"It is believed that a shoot-out ensued between the guard and the suspects. The guard was shot dead and the suspects managed to open the cash box, taking an undisclosed amount of cash."

Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks said the guard had sustained a single gunshot wound to the face.

"When paramedics arrived at the scene the man had succumbed to his injury and was declared dead," said Wicks.

Ndlovu said the suspects had fled in a Ford Bantam.

The police are investigating.
