A group of De Doorns protesters vented their anger on refugee activist Braam Hanekom on Monday, threatening to beat him up because he was "spying for the Zimbabweans".

Hanekom, the leader of People against Suffering, Suppression, Oppression and Poverty (Passop) who is considered an active protector of the rights of refugees, had made an appearance at a march by De Doorns residents to call for the release of 23 residents of Stofland informal settlement arrested and charged with demolishing Zimbabwean refugees' shacks. Hanekom had been in De Doorns since the outbreak of violence on Tuesday last week.

The protesters first denounced Hanekom as a labour broker. Then a man carrying a broom started questioning him about his presence at the march.

He told Hanekom to "f*** off and go to Zimbabwe or I will beat you up". Although a little shaken, Hanekom retaliated and asked the other men who had joined in the threats: "Did this coloured man (with broom) tell you to do this?"

WarSteiner- please checks and verify your facts before posting such comments. I live in America as well and if you had taken time to check your facts you would have found out that the largest recipients of welfare in America are actually whites, not blacks as you stated. Now just because the current government is corrupt and there are rascals outthere that preach hate and show racist tendecies, that automatically applies to all Black South Africans? That is such an ignorant and diversive comment. During the apartheid era, not all whites were racist. Stop spreading hate.

This is nothing more than proof that instead of working to improve SA and build something equal to or as great as the whites did they would rather have the goverment give them wealth and homes. Black south Africans are known around the world as the most racist and corrupt in the world. I live in America and I read all the news papers and I know this. In America we have the same problem most blacks would rather dwell on the past and collect welfare than man up and work for their communities and state.

This is bad management by the ruling party. They have allowed problems beyond the border to affect the country while profiting from farming contracts and Lithuli House buying busineses.
Dont vent you anger on desperate people that looked after you in your struggle but go for those that have failed to do their duty.
