The DA is to ask the Public Protector to investigate alleged "fruitless" expenditure by Zoleka Capa, the mayor of the OR Tambo district municipality in the Eastern Cape.

A spokesman for the DA, MP Willem Doman, said: "The Democratic Alliance will request an investigation by the Public Protector on whether the R3.15 million spent by the ANC mayor of the OR Tambo district municipality, Zoleka Capa, on a lavish trip to Zambia, was unauthorised and fruitless expenditure.

"The R3.15 million spent by mayor Capa certainly does not appear to fall into the ambit of legitimate municipal expenditure."

Doman said that if it was found to be unauthorised expenditure, the mayor and councillors involved should be held responsible and pay back the money in terms of Section 176 (2) of the Local Government Finance Management Act of 2003.
