The DA called for an independent investigation on Monday into why a toddler's legs were amputated when she was supposed to have been treated for burns to her hands at a state hospital.

"While it is good that Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu is today demanding answers from hospital staff in the case of maimed two-year-old Thembisa Kometsi, an independent investigation is needed to establish the facts," said DA health spokesperson Jack Bloom.

He said the incident happened two months ago but a "high level reaction" only took place once the story hit the press.

On Sunday, Gauteng health spokesperson Mandla Sidu said that an urgent meeting would be held on Monday with hospital staff to find out what happened after the Daveyton girl was transferred to Johannesburg's Charlotte Maxeke Hospital.

The MEC also wants an explanation from the Rahima Moosa hospital to explain the "insensitive treatment" of a family whose baby had died earlier this week.

Yasser Marere told the media that after his son died of asphyxia during birth he had to search through the bodies of 40 infants at the hospital mortuary for his own child. - Sapa

I have read your moderation . I still feel the majority of people are still oppressed. In a way as their rights are been overlooked . Nurses and doctors in S.africa they have an attitude . I am a nurse myself and it pains me to see how they speak to people. People in S.africa they have experienced apartheid and in a way they feel inferior .They cant question things ,they are been pulled backwards and forwards. Having been working in the UK almost ten years I have learned how the effect of apartheid have destroys people confidence and their self-esteem.alias

I felt physicaly sick when I heard this story. That poor little girl! The people responsible for this tragedy may not get the punishment they deserve in this lifetime, but one day they will have to stand before God and be accountable for what they have done.

How absolutely tragic......do these supposedly care givers have no shame, no mercy, no work ethic....guess the answer is no. As someone said they do not give a F. It is just a job so why even try and do it properly....the story of this country as we slide steadily into the bottom of the third world. Civilisation, there is none here, no respect for anything, from the big boy politicians to the don't give a damn worker.....sad.....cry the beloved country.....

Instead of a second liver transplant, Manto needs a brain transplant. She needs a taste of her own medicine, as it is partly due to her incompetence that hospitals are in this sorry state. Sepsis is caused by dirty needles and for the toddlers' legs to become gangerous is due to sheer neglect.
