An off-duty police officer has been shot and wounded in a hijacking in KaBokweni near White River, Mpumalanga police said on Monday.

Superintendent Malcolm Mokomene said the incident happened at about 8pm on Sunday night while Detective Constable Sabelo Manana, 35, was visiting a friend.

The two were standing at the gate next to Manana's Honda Ballade, when two young men approached them.

"One of the men produced a firearm and held them up, demanding the vehicle," said Mokomene.

He shot the officer in the ear and the attackers drove off in Manana's car.

Mokomene said the officer was rushed to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.
