An elderly couple was robbed at gunpoint by men who entered their yard on the pretense of being in search of a room to rent in Tembisa on Thursday evening, Johannesburg police said.

Sergeant Tsholofelo Madumo said two armed men entered the couple's home in Tembisa's Sethuga section at around 7.30pm while three other men waited outside in a getaway vehicle.

They found the elderly woman fetching water from an outside tap and asked if she had a room to let.

Without waiting for an answer, the men allegedly forced the woman inside the house where her elderly husband, two children and two grandchildren were. The elderly man was sleeping at the time.
