Chief electoral officer Pansy Tlakula has been appointed chancellor of the Vaal University of Technology (VUT).

She is the first woman to occupy the post, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said on Friday.

Tlakula would be inaugurated on Saturday at the university's main campus in Vanderbijlpark, IEC spokeswoman Kate Bapela said.

Tlakula said she was honoured to be appointed to high office at the university.

"There's no better honour than that of one's local community. The VUT is literally a stone's throw from where I was born.

"I am so proud of this moment and trust that my term of office will be of benefit to the wider community of the Vaal University of Technology."
