The geologist accused of hiring his gardener to murder his former wife paid more than R40 000 to private investigators in the search for Cordelia Prinsloo's murderer.
Cobus Prinsloo, 62, on Tuesday told the Pretoria North Magistrate's Court that he had nothing to do with the woman's killing.
He and Lucas Noto Moloi, 33, are applying for bail.
'Her death was shocking and tragic news to me and our two sons'
Moloi had been working as a security guard in Rustenburg before he started working for Prinsloo on his smallholding in Buffelsdrift, where Cordelia also had a house.
Moloi told the court how he hit the woman with the sharp end of a spade in the back of her head on October 12 this year. "I didn't count how many times, but I hit her more than twice," he said.

Moloi alleged that he did this after Prinsloo offered him R50 000 and a house for the murder.
During cross-examination yesterday, Moloi admitted to defence advocate Hennie de Vos SC that he went into Cordelia's residence after the murder, taking a laptop, a cellphone and a case. He also took jewellery and a Krugerrand.
De Vos said Prinsloo would deny conspiring to murder his former wife. In fact, he had spend R42 750 on private investigators to find the murderer. On October 23, almost a week before Moloi's arrest, these investigators told Prinsloo that the gardener's cellphone was being used in the QwaQwa area, where his parents stayed.
Moloi replied: "For Mr Prinsloo to spend that amount was just because he wanted to lose that money. He knew everything about this murder."
The advocate could also not understand why Moloi did not contact Prinsloo if the latter indeed owe him R50 000 for the murder.
Moloi said he had no money to phone, and that was why he had sold the Krugerrand for R3 000 on October 27. He was arrested the following day.
