Soccer will undergo one of its most radical changes this week when the Europa League's group stage kicks off with five-man refereeing teams.

Most IOL readers thought that additional linesmen would be good for the game of soccer.

IOL asked its readers: Will two more soccer match officials ruin the beautiful game?

Of the 1 094 people who participated in the 72 percent (783 votes) said "No", and 28 percent (311 votes) said "Yes".

Here are some of the comments posted online:
Biffo: The ref cannot be every where, extra eyes will definitely help! Istill cannot see why technology cannot also be used as it is in cricket, especially in the penalty box and if the ref makes a bad decision it could be over ruled.

Julius: Football plays silly games. They need to instil a bit of discipline. Cards shown if you .... talk back to a referee ..... argue ....... stop a free kick being taken quickly ........ swear at officials. Stop the basic lack od discipline and the rest will follow. Footballers do not know how to behave s sportsmen - in the true sense of the word.

Dread: Maybe this move will help clamp down on diving. Soccer players have become professional clowns these days and every measure meant to stamp out cheating from the beautiful game, definitely has my blessings.

Len:Fifa needs to get on with the bloody times. Another referee on the goal line is really a waste of time, when technology can so easily deal with the problem. All you need for decisions whether a ball has gone over the line is to magntise both the ball and the goal line and when the ball crosses the goal line, underneath the bar, it will provide feedback to the referee and linesman.

Worried:They are destroying our beautiful game by letting the refs go unpunished for their mistakes. Those mistake are actually the real cause of violence by supporters! Punish poor refering then you will see no more violence in the beautiful game!

Mr Pempi:officiating any sport is about perspective. last night 2 officials missed the Arsenal handball and a goal was scored because of it. only Maradonna can claim 'the hand of God' It is a known fact that not 5 years ago in the PSL, a referee would have a kaiser chiefs welcoming party waiting for him at the airport and this same band would make the farewell party as he would simply be put on the next flight home! a substitute ref would then be appointed hastily and chiefs would win. around the world the ref is harassed and the presence of more officials will prevent thugs from doing this. (keane (MUFC) rooney, drogba, terry) FIFA must do more and even use camara footage. last year c.ronaldo stomped and struck apponents in consecutive weeks and nothing came of it! where is the law? extra officials will also prevent ronaldo flopping over in the breeze - did these prima donnas ever see Sounness, Phil Thompson , brian robson etc play in the 80S? Hard , clean tackless on hard men. bring on more refs, I am a firm believer in 'the more the merrier' YNWA
