Hardus Pienaar, one of South Africa's former world junior javelin champions, came very close to qualifying for the 2008 Olympic Games when he recorded a distance of 80.49m at an international athletics meeting in Gothenburg, Sweden on Tuesday night.
It was only his second competition of the year, after being sidelined with a knee injury, and he narrowly missed the required 81 metres
Before departing to Europe two weeks ago Pienaar predicted that he was ready to achieve the required distance despite still having problems with his knee. He opened his European campaign a week ago in Arnhem where he threw 75.94m.
