 Ajax, Santos get chance to extend points gap

The second half of the domestic Premiership season will get underway this weekend and the Cape sides are in a very good position to push for the title in 2009.

The league has been squeezed into a shorter period of time in 2009 to accommodate Bafana Bafana's preparations for the 2010 World Cup on home soil, so it was important to start well. Ajax and Santos have done that so far.

Ajax are second, two points behind SuperSport United, while Santos are three points behind the champions in third. The so-called "big three" teams, Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs, are behind the pace-setters and fighting to stay in the race.

The Urban Warriors and the People's Team have an opportunity to put some daylight between them and the Soweto giants this weekend.

Ajax will return to the scene of their MTN8 final humiliation when they take on the Buccaneers at the Orlando Stadium.

It will be new coach Foppe de Haan's second match in charge after using the two-week international break to get his philosophies through to the players. The Dutchman won his first match at the helm with a 2-1 win against Mpumalanga Black Aces.

Ajax's unbeaten record away from home has been the big reason for their log position. This was one of their problems in 2008 in the second half of the campaign after leading the way after the break.

Santos finished off the first half of the season on a high with a 4-0 hammering of Martitzburg United at the Coetzenburg Stadium in Stellenbosch. It looks like the team has been revitalised by coach Boebie Solomons and the spirit in the camp appears to be good.

Santos walloped Chiefs 3-0 at the EPRU Stadium
Santos will take on Chiefs at Port Elizabeth's Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday night. The game was moved from Coetzenburg because the stadium was deemed too small to host the Amakhosi.
