This is the moment a masked robber beat a shop assistant unconscious with a metal bar - just so he could steal a tub of sweets.

The thief left his victim with a fractured skull after targeting a van delivering sweets and cigarettes to a service station at Failsworth, near Oldham, Greater Manchester.

The victim, 30, was on the garage forecourt helping unload goods from the vehicle when he was ambushed and battered.

After grabbing the sweets, the robber fled with two accomplices in a dark Honda Accord towards Oldham.

The victim, who has not been named, was taken to North Manchester Hospital for treatment to head injuries. He has since been discharged and is now recovering at home.

Greater Manchester Police released footage of the incident in an attempt to catch the robbers who struck at 7.20pm on September 4.

Detective Inspector Chris Bridge said: 'We hope that by sending out this footage, people will understand how cowardly this attack actually was.

'We are appealing directly to the criminal fraternity in Oldham too, because even career criminals will wince at how this rookie panicked and could have killed this man - all, in the end, for a tub of confectionary.

'We also know that there were people who were actually at the petrol station, but did not give the police a statement. Please get in touch.'

A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and has been bailed until 21 October 2009 pending further inquires. - Daily Mail
