An on-the-run burglary suspect taunted the authorities today with a home-made mugshot showing him standing next to a police van.
Matthew Maynard's mugshot appeared in the South Wales Evening Post newspaper at the weekend, together with seven others, as part of a police appeal to track down wanted suspects.
Staff at the newspaper were then bemused to get a phone call from Maynard claiming he was unhappy with the photograph they used.
"He telephoned on Monday saying he was not happy with the picture and that he would send in another," a spokesman for the newspaper said today.
"We just didn't believe that he would do it."

Maynard sent in a photo of himself via his mobile phone, taunting the authorities by standing in front of a police van.
The 23-year-old is wanted in connection with a burglary in the Mount Pleasant area of Swansea, south Wales, in September.
The snapshot features on the newspaper's front page today, ensuring the public gets a far clearer image of the fugitive's face.
One police officer said: "He is a berk. He thinks he is being clever by showing off like this, but we'll have him in soon now.
"Everyone in Swansea will know what he looks like now. What an idiot!"
Acting Chief Inspector Nigel Whitehouse, who led the operation, said: "Maynard is very well know to us in the police here in Swansea.
"He is a well known member of the criminal fraternity and seeing him like this is not a surprise to us.
"We hope that now many more people will know what he looks like and give us information which can lead to his arrest.
"But if he has any sense at all then he should just give himself up to us now."
Chief Inspector Whitehouse added: "This has been a highly successful operation and has had a positive impact in the communities where people live, visit and work.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Swansea for the information they have provided, which, without any doubt, was instrumental in enabling us to effect a high number of arrests."
Earlier this week police carried out a major operation making 81 arrests over 48 hours in connection with crimes from burglary to assault and fraud.
Four of the eight suspects featured in the mugshots released at the weekend were among those arrested.
A South Wales Police spokesman confirmed today that Maynard was not among them and remains at large. - Daily Mail
