 Three hanged for raping teenager

Tehran - Three Iranian men have been hanged for raping a 17-year-old boy, who subsequently committed suicide, the Fars news agency reported on Thursday.

The three, who were not identified, were convicted of kidnapping the youth in the central city of Isfahan and taking him out of town, where they assaulted him.

No date was given for the executions.

The latest hangings bring to at least 258 the number of people executed in Iran so far this year, according to an AFP count based on news reports.

In 2008, Iran hanged 246 people, the highest number of executions carried out by any country except for China.

Tehran says the death penalty is a necessary tool for maintaining public security and is applied only after exhaustive judicial proceedings.
