A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Oaxaca in southern Mexico on Monday, but there were no immediate reports of damage.

The epicenter of the quake was located 14 miles (23 km) southeast of the town of Miahuatlan in Oaxaca, Mexico, according to the US Geological Survey.

The USGS initially reported it as a 5.9 magnitude quake. Quakes of magnitude 5 and above are considered moderate and capable of causing considerable damage.

"There are no reports of damage at the moment," said a civil protection official in the city of Oaxaca.

Oaxaca state is popular with U.S. tourists for its ruins, churches, beaches and Mexican cuisine. - Reuters
