The blaze broke out around midnight in a third-storey apartment and spread throughout the building before being put out by firefighters.

Of the six victims - four women and two men - five died from smoke inhalation and one burned to death.

A spokesman for the town authorities said the four injured were in hospital and one was in a serious condition.

When the fire started there were 19 residents and two guardians in the home, which is in the centre of Seville.
