About 105 people were arrested in central Johannesburg over the weekend for various crimes, police said on Monday.

Inspector Xoli Mbele said the arrests were conducted during a crime combating operation around the city's central business district between Friday and Monday morning.

He said the people arrested would be answering to charges ranging from armed robbery, business robbery, theft, housebreaking and common assault, to malicious damage to property and shoplifting.

Others would face charges of impersonating police, rape, negligent driving and drunk driving.

All the arrested people were expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates' Court on Monday. - Sapa
