An Ntuzuma man was arrested yesterday after he allegedly beat his teenage daughter to death on learning that she had defied him and persisted in wearing a tongue stud.

KwaMashu police Constable Mumsy Mfeka said the girl's father knew of the piercing, and had told her to remove it. She said the father became more upset on learning that she had been wearing the stud to school.

Mfeka said: "When her father discovered that she had been wearing the stud, he asked why she had been disobedient and he than beat her up with an unplugged electrical cable. When the father learnt that his daughter was not moving, he rushed her to a nearby clinic, where she was declared dead on arrival."

Captain Khephu Ndlovu said the father later handed himself over to the police and was charged with murder.

The incident is being investigated.

Parenthood is hard however it is disturbing that a parent would go to an extent of wanting to wound the child for disobidiency. In my view beating someone to death must have included a lot of force aiming at inflicting everlasting pain - indeed the father achieved his objective by killing the child all because of his ego and pride and the everlasting pain will be felt by the mother, siblings, relatives as well as, to a certain extent, by the entire country. The verdict should be easy on this case: many years in jail. The fact is the man has killed a defenceless young girl. The time has come for South Africa to be serious about combating all sorts of crime. As much as this man is the father of the deceased and handed himself over to the police, he must be punished accordingly for having committed homicide. Liniency on this case will encourage others to follow suit knowing that there are incentives to committing homicide.

Tongue studs? What is their purpose? I have some mixed feelings about them because I don't know their use...some say they are fashion - jewelry inside the mouth? Some say they serve other purposes. Yet, if they are unwholesome in health or moral values, it seems to make no difference what you tell the children about them (as I have heard different things from different people about the studs), they are rebellious in their teens and will do exactly what you tell them not to do. The custom of beating a child with some kind of cord is as old as I am. When I was young, I don't even remember what I did to deserve such, but my father beat me with an ironing cord and I had thick whelts all over my little legs that needed treatment from my mom and I was under covers in bed. But, to beat someone to death, especially your own child, brings us to the matter of psychology. He was enraged most likely about a number of things besides his daughter and the stud. Question: where was his father/parent mind? Is beating a part of the culture that is passed down from generation to generation? And Mark, I am with you in asking, "Where were the neighbors?" If they have the same value as this unfortunate girl's father, they would most likely not respond. We must teach and demonstrate love and compassion and it will spread.

Because of Satan who doesn't sleep who want to win everyday the girl died what leaves us? no punishment for our kids... I grew up getting a hiding of commming late from school that never killed me. But know I think the judgement day is near too much things happening arround us. we need to pray for this. Please don't blame this man! Dont come with your bible and satan crap, you obviously have a deeply disturbing interpretation of the bible, you say "this man is punishing his child according to the bible" WAKE UP the man committed murder over a tongue ring.. this is not what god/Jehovah said in any bible on the planet in ANY religion. This man must be punished according to the law. I hope its servere.

Tongue studs are absolutely unhygenic. Bacteria, salivia and micro food pieces get into the hole. They should actually be banned. This, however, does not warrant that the person who wears a tongue stud, be murdered. The father should be punished with a triple life sentence and rot to death.

A portion of society were its acceptable to hit a child with an electrical cable, where its also acceptable to destroy property if you are unhappy, where raping an infant is believed to be the cure for Aids and where necklacing used to be the norm? I agree that people like these are not animals, they are sub-human!
