South Africa scored 44 percent in an international study rating the reputation of countries among foreigners, Sake24 reported on Wednesday.

The study by the Reputation Institution found that the rest of the world perceived South Africa to have a "poor and vulnerable" reputation.

The only countries out of 34 nations that fared worse than South Africa - which was ranked 30 - were South Korea, China, Russia and the Ukraine.

The best-ranked nations were Switzerland and Canada.

South Africans did not rate their own country high either
"A good reputation builds political diplomacy and lures tourists and international investment," said Heather Robinson, manager of the Reputation Institute in South Africa.

South Africans did not rate their own country high either, with the country ranked by its own citizens 33rd out of 34 places.

Why do you care about what overseas people think they know about our country? Those people still thinks that we are living in the bundus and we have wild animals running all over, they have no clue of the civilization that we have. Where do they get an information about the country's murders if they do not know about civilization? Are they stereotyped or are they phobic?

We might be having high crime rate in the country but that still does not make worst country. The media out there are blowing things out of proportion, keeping in mind that some of the stories are based on hearsay. 1. South Africa is honest in showing/telling about the crimes and negligence happening in the country. Other countries are hidding their flaws as they want to appear to be the best in the world. America is still so very racist if you search deeper so is England, they are even smart as*ed crooks. 2. We are safe wrong all the natural disasters, every year large number of people die due to that they stay in Wendy house and basement to safeguard themselves. 3. We have high rate of employment and that is happening because we are a developing country. At least your lives are still affordable and one can manage to stay in a bigger house. People overseas are earning round about $32 000 per annum, they cant afford even afford their accomodation. Korea they dont even have much of the parks or flat ground as we do. 4. Africa is rich in minerals but we are still poor.If you people wanted to bring change in the continent you could have kept your skills around and help to develop new technology that will save us all than taking what is ours and give it to other people because we are lazy to to anything. We could join the heads to find solution to our problems than jumping the ships. All those who want to leave the country can leave now - we do not need bench warmers and oxygen thieves sitting around waiting for things to happen than making things happen for them. So next time when you think of leaving the country, just think of the beauties that you are leaving behind and most people out there are willing they could get.

Sad to see that the most negative comments are from those overseas. They are generally our ambassadors. Wherever I have travelled including OZ and Uk, the locals allways seem to have negative opinions of South africans living there, stating they are the most negative people they have ever met. Lighten up and ask what you can do to make this world especially SA a better place to live in.

My panic attacks stopped, and although i still walk around milan late at night with mace in my hand (the paranoia never really goes away) I am happier, calmer and wouldnt go back to sa if you paid me! Are you really surprised that the world sees sa in a bad light if southafricans see it like this?

Hundreds of us South Africans work on cruise ships sailing from the USA because jobs are hard to come because of affirmative action and BEE is only for Blacks where money is to be made.. We work with crew of about fifty nationalities on each ship and meet mostly American guests sailing. We can only speak the truth and not lie deluding ourselves as "patriotic". Crime is rampant in South Africa. We South African all know this. Don't fool ourselves to lie to tourist to get their business. When guest and crew speak to us about South Africa the topic is crime, crime, crime and we speak the truth that how dangerous it is to live in South Africa. The New York Times few years ago mentioned South Africa is second after Colombia for the highest murders and crime population capita in the world. We are sad that we have to talk the truth and warn foreigners that even the shopping malls are no longer safe. We talk about how safe we were under White rule and now under the ANC it is the opposite. The ANC is sympathetic to criminals and will not bring back the death sentence when all other similar third world countries like South Africa now have the death sentence. The way South Africa is including the future potential President i.e. Malema -we are not proud to be South Africans overseas and feel ashamed. We do not and do not regard Zuma as our President as long as shame unproven guilt of crime and corruption hangs over his head till the end. I can afford to leave my family to work overseas as each home in our street are paying for private security guards to protect our street. To the South African who got asylum in Canada if I were you I will collect all the press articles to prove to the Canadian Government that South Africa is a dangerous place. I will even testify for him if I could. On CNN and BBC whenever 2010 World Cup is mentioned crime talk goes along with it. The German footballer Ballack will be wearing bullet proof vest in 2010 in South Africa. Cruise ships have stopped calling in Durban after guests were getting robbed on the beachfront- the truth about crime from us to the cruise ship company we work for saw to this as well. Zuma wake up and do something. We read about the “legal crime" your Ministers are committing with so far having spent R46 million on cars and you do nothing.
