A 35-year-old Sydenham man has been arrested and charged for reporting that his BMW car had been taken by hijackers when in fact he had left it with a woman friend.

The man went to the police in Mayville on Wednesday and reported that he had been hijacked by two armed men. While on patrol, police came across a car which matched the description of the "hijacked" vehicle parked outside a house in Sparks Estate.

They towed it to the police station and that evening a young woman came to the station with the car keys. She said she and a friend had spent the night with the man and he had given them the keys.

Police said when the man was confronted he admitted that he had faked the hijacking. He is due to appear in the Durban magistrate's court on April 9.
