A Shoshanguve man, 35, has been arrested in connection with the shooting of his wife and an assault on the man she was with on Friday night.
The suspect told police he returned home from work to find the couple in bed.
Police Inspector Anton Breedt said the suspect allegedly beat the man with a metal object before leaving the house. He then returned with a gun and shot his wife, he said.
The woman was admitted to George Mukhari Hospital where she is in a critical condition.
According to Breedt, police seized a 9mm pistol and arrested the man. "The suspect will appear in court next week," he said.

Breedt said the other man who had been with the woman fled the scene and has not been found.
In a separate incident on Saturday night, a man tried to rob a taxi driver of R100 in Pretoria North.
Breedt said the taxi driver stopped to collect the suspect on Soutpan Road.
"The suspect tried to rob the taxi driver, who lost control of his vehicle and collided with a pedestrian," Breedt said.
The 35-year-old pedestrian died at the scene. A case of culpable homicide has been opened.
"Police arrested the suspect and he will appear in court next week," he said.
