Police are urgently trying to track a witness who may have information concerning the murder of prominent businessman David Peri.

The man, known only as Craig and who was driving a new red Alfa Romeo Spyder, is wanted for questioning by detectives working on the case.

Peri, 39, was driving home from his Sandton business in his Mercedes-Benz S600 last Monday night, when he was executed. He stopped at the robot intersection at Third Avenue and Melville Street in Hyde Park shortly before 7pm.

A green Nissan Sentra pulled up on his right side, and the occupants opened fire, hitting his car 18 times. Peri was hit six times and died instantly.

The trial was scheduled to proceed the morning after the murder
Investigating officer Inspector Gabriel Hall, of the Johannesburg Serious and Violent Crimes Unit, said the Sentra was found abandoned in Sandton last Tuesday. It had been stolen in Brixton two weeks before the hit but was linked to the murder only on Friday.

On Monday, forensic investigators checked the car for evidence.

"We found something that may help us," Hall said, declining to divulge what this was for fear of jeopardising the investigation.

According to Hall, Peri was an Israeli citizen and the sole owner and director of Southmead Trading.

"I was originally told he was into import-export, but now we believe he was into some kind of telecommunications."

At the time of his death, Peri was on bail and facing a fraud charge, with several other investigations into fraudulent activity pending against him. The trial was scheduled to proceed the morning after the murder.

Anyone with information is requested to phone Hall on 082-568-4668.
