The rape of a St Lucia woman and the attack on her husband at the beach here at the weekend would have a "devastating" impact on tourism in the resort.
"People are extremely upset about the incident, which requires the urgent attention of all the authorities in the area, the municipality, Greater St Lucia Wetland Park and KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife," said Klaus Thaumueller, secretary of the St Lucia-based Beach Action Committee.
He said a public meeting was being planned for Wednesday night to discuss crime issues.
Police confirmed on Monday that a 54-year-old St Lucia woman had been raped and her husband, 57, stabbed by two men on the beach on Saturday afternoon. They said a 23-year-old suspect was being questioned.
