California - Juan Ignacio Chela, who upset two-time defending champ Lleyton Hewitt in the third round, overpowered Tommy Haas 6-4, 6-2 on Tuesday at the ATP/WTA Tennis Masters Series event.

Chela, of Argentina, advanced to the quarterfinals where he will face either top seed Roger Federer of Switzerland or American 18th seed Mardy Fish.

Chela hit nine winners and had 14 unforced errors, 13 less than Haas.

On Monday, Chela stunned eighth seed Hewitt, of Australia, who was trying to become the first to win three-consecutive Indian Wells titles.

Chela also snapped Hewitt's winning streak in this event at 13 matches.

The 24-year-old Chela has rediscovered his form in the past few weeks, reaching the semifinals in Acapulco earlier this month and the quarterfinals in Brazil last month.

Haas, of Germany, was playing in just his third tournament after missing all of last year with an injury.

No 3 seed Lindsay Davenport defeated fellow American Meghann Shaughnessy 6-1, 6-3 on the women's of the draw.

Joining her in the quarterfinals is Argentina's Gisela Dulko, who beat American Marissa Irvin 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/2) and Colombia's Fabiola Zuluaga who beat Laura Granville, of the United States, 7-5, 6-2.
