Florida - Former champions Lindsay Davenport and Mary Pierce advanced with straight-sets victories in the Bausch & Lomb Championships on Tuesday.

After a first-round bye, Davenport, winner in 1997 and runner-up last year, beat Tian Tian Sun of China 6-2, 7-5 to begin her quest for a second title this season.

Pierce was in no mood for more drama against Meghann Shaughnessy, whom she dispatched 6-1, 6-2 in the first round with 43 winners in an hour.

In their only previous matchup last November in the Fed Cup final, Pierce won 8-6 in the third set to help France beat the United States for its second title.

Pierce, a three-time finalist before finally winning in 1998, hasn't played for two months and will next face second-seeded Serena Williams, who won the Nasdaq-100 Open on Sunday following an eight-month layoff.

No 8-seeded Vera Zvonareva of Russia battled past Tina Pisnik of Slovenia 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 and will meet the winner of the all-Swiss affair between No 12 Patty Schnyder and Marie-Gayanay Mikaelian.

Also, No 10 Silvia Farina Elia of Italy won the last three games to beat Elena Likhovtseva of Russia 6-4, 6-4. - Sapa-AP
