A new type of "condom with teeth" aimed at preventing rape has gone on sale in South Africa, a radio report from Kimberley said on Friday.
To mark the beginning of a two-week campaign to stamp out violence against women and children, 57-year-old inventor Sonette Ehlers demonstrated the device, named Rapex, at an event in her hometown.
Dubbed "the penis flytrap" by South African media, the Rapex personal security device is used by women, and inserted and removed with an applicator as with a tampon.
It is made from latex and has several rows of sharp "teeth" that can only be removed from the penis of a rapist surgically and should therefore lead to the capture and prosecution of the attacker.
