A show poster of a woman standing in a doorway in white underwear and stockings, promoting a new local stage comedy, has been banned by the eThekwini Municipality on the grounds that it is "lewd and provocative".

The comedy, Noises Off, opens at Durban's Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre this week.

The poster ban has so enraged the show's producer and director, Steven Stead of Durban's KickstArt theatre company, that he has called on the public, via email and Facebook, to write to municipal manager Michael Sutcliffe to complain.

He believes the theatre community is being victimised and that double standards are at work.

"They allow ads for a strip venue on city bins and bus shelters, as well as club posters depicting bondage nuns and busty nurses suggestively licking lollies," he said.

"Double standards? Institutional bullying? Not acceptable in a democratic, liberal country. Even the Nats would not have insisted on stars on our poster picture."

Stead said he had been informed that the poster for his production of the hit Michael Frayn farce could not be displayed on street poles in the "interests of public safety".

"It really is hard enough making quality theatre in this country, and yet harder (and prohibitively costly) to market and advertise, and the municipality is simply making it almost impossible," he added.

"We are now 10 days behind with our advertising campaign after wrangling with them, and drawing embarrassing, concealing skirts on the image (which were still rejected because 'the lady hasn't got enough clothes on').

"We stand to lose a great deal of money from the delay."

Noises Off is a farce about a farce - a clever send-up about a theatre company whose backstage bickerings and comedy are more dramatic than that in the show they take from rehearsal to opening night.

The cast includes award-winning local actors Lisa Bobbert, Ben Voss, Peter Court, Darren King, Bryan Hiles and Michael Gritten.

The play is also the flagship production at this year's Hilton Arts Festival, to be held at Hilton College from September 18 to 20.

Municipal officials said they would respond to questions about the poster on Monday.

This kind of censorship is sad and a waste of energy and money. However, I hope the fuss and media coverage will ensure full houses for what is definitely one of the funniest plays I have ever seen. So if you're looking for a good, harmless, entertaining laugh, go and see Noises Off.
I wish the production every success.

This is great marketing! Now everyone will flock to the show. They should send Slutcliffe a bottle of champagne by way of thanks.

Get a life guys. This is typically the SERVICE DELIVERY paradigm held by most municipalities. They concentrate their energy on these important matters while the people suffer the indignity of being fleeced at every turn with "Admin" and "Fees" levied by them to support the fatcat lifestyles. These officials have no idea of what they are employed to do in the first place. The true heroes are the ones that conceive the most creative ideas in amassing funds for the local authority. The ones that truly want to deliver services are muscled out of the system. So hang in there for another round of creative entertainment from EM when they announce another bright fund raising idea in these tough economic times.Now...thats entertainment!!!!

In 2007 one of the schools in Cape Town produced this play - my son was in it and all of the cast were students of the school. There's nothing crude or provocative about the way she was dressed - in fact she was fantastic - the play is must see - it's a comedy - very ingenius to put together - the audience were in hysterics - we had tears streaming down our faces. The e-Thekwini Municipality has gone brain-dead. Go watch it for the humour.

ban all posters and advertising with a sexual connotation and I'll be ok with that , but you have to be able to apply a rule , if it is a question of interpretation it cannot be fairly applied.

The council are unreasonable bullies. Each time we submit a poster for approval they come up with new, often absurd rules. Sometimes the rules contradict those before it and others just seem made up. Im just the simple designer, so to me with each new ridiculous change that they demand of my work makes me believe that its just a show of power, a way to patronise us and exert control over something they, quite frankly, dont even care about. The outright banning of this poster was the final straw. We need a better solution to these Metro Council Muppets. Enough is enough.

I will bet my moldy mop that all who are in support of this decision to ban the poster, are the ones watching "Bald and the Beastifull", "The Young and the Breasteless", et al on TV ... shows in which little else but deceit, snogging and all manner of immorality are depicted. "Return to godliness"? ... Bah humbug! Return to the god of the Bible? ... The god who wipes out cities for supposed immorality transgressions (but saves Lot and daughters) ... Daughters who, without retribution form that god, subsequently make their father drunk, have sex with him and have his children?!! ... These are chosen people?!! ... Ya right!! Catch a wake up and stop being indoctrinated sheeple dammit!!

Childish and pathetic...!!! Many Zulu maidens on posters and banners are bare breasted but Sutcliffe is happy with that.
