 Sixteen municipalities pull out of Salga

About 16 municipalities in the Western Cape have terminated their membership of the South African Local Government Association (Salga) to form their own workers' organisation, the South African Municipal Workers Union said on Thursday.

"While accepting the constitutional protections, in particular the Bill of Rights, we strongly believe that a change in government should not lead to the destruction or erosion of established structures in pursuit of a political agenda," said SAMWU General Secretary Mthandeki Nhlapho.

Nhlapho said these new municipalities had already started registering their own local government organisation.

He said SAMWU would call on the Minister of Local Government Sydney Mufamadi to intervene and put the new organisation under scrutiny as they believed it was not prescribing to the required legislation.

"We are concerned about workers' security as the DA is merely just pursuing a political agenda at the expense of workers rights.

"We are not going to fold our arms when workers' rights are threatened by those who misuse the constitution," said Nhlapho. - Sapa
