The University of Cape Town (UCT) is one of the world's top universities, according to a prestigious annual international ranking system.
UCT has been ranked 179 in the Times Higher Education QS World University Rankings for 2008, improving its position from 200th place last year.
It is the only African university on the list, and has climbed from 257th place in 2006.
In a statement on Tuesday, UCT Vice-Chancellor Max Price said it was "great" the university was so well-rated.
"We are pleased that we are competitive in the international higher education sector," Price said in the statement.
"As an institution, we constantly measure ourselves and the quality of our entire enterprise on our own well-developed set of criteria. This is an ongoing process aimed at continuously improving and strengthening our institution."
