As one of their classmates was buried yesterday, pupils and teachers of the Oude Molen Technical High School received trauma counselling after a car accident which killed two students on Monday.

Five matrics, all aged 18, of the Pinelands school were travelling home by car after they had finished writing their final Physical Science Chemistry exam.

Darren Hoffman and Roqeeb Isaacs died instantly.

Classmates Ezra Meisenheimer and Jason Kansley were taken to Life Vincent Pallotti Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries and discharged.

Monique Odendaal was taken to Groote Schuur Hospital, where she remains in a stable condition after suffering external injuries.

Isaacs was buried yesterday, in line with Muslim rites. Education MEC Donald Grant spoke to his parents and conveyed his condolences on behalf of the school and the Education Department.

His spokeswoman, Bronagh Casey, said yesterday trauma counsellors were sent to the school and would remain there for as long as they were needed.

The school was planning a memorial service for Hoffman and Isaacs, which was provisionally set for Friday, November 27.

School principal Tony Marshall had said exams for pupils, excluding matric candidates, would be postponed.

Casey said pupils at the school had been traumatised by the death of the two.

"Those two learners had been very sociable and very friendly."

Scores of pupils yesterday left messages of support on the school's Facebook page.

"My sincerest condolences to the Hoffman and Isaacs family. You're in our prayers," read one message.

Community Safety MEC Lennit Max offered his condolences to the families and warned about the dangers of speeding and reckless driving.

Max echoed the sentiments of Deputy Transport Minister Jeremy Cronin, who warned young drivers keen to celebrate the end of their exams.

"Young drivers must recognise that they don't have the necessary driving experience and skills to react swiftly in an unexpected situation," Max said.
