Rome - More and more Italians are using their third-generation (3G) cellphones to buy pornographic videos and photos, research published on Thursday revealed.

According to a survey conducted by Eurispes, an Italian research institute, 3G phone owners spent €140-million on pornographic material in 2004 - three times the amount spent by Italians on old-fashioned pornographic magazines over the same period.

Eurispes estimates that the country's main cellphone providers sold at least 70-million five-minute erotic videos at €2 each to their subscribers during 2004.

This makes 3G phones the fourth-largest source of revenue for the pornographic industry after pay-per-view and subscription television (€247-million), home videos (€233-million) and the Internet (€181-million).

Overall, the sale of pornographic material in Italy has risen from €895-million in 2002 to 1.1 billion in 2004.

The Eurispes survey, which was sponsored by the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Social Communications, noted that through the Internet or cellphones, the pornographic industry seeks to reach clients wherever they are, 24 hours a day. - Sapa-dpa
