Iran - Iran is to receive a shipment of 60 000 tons of yellow maize from South Africa at the end of May via a transaction concluded by Afgri Trading, the company said on Thursday.
"The transaction will come as good news to South African farmers, who have been battling to get competitive prices for their maize crop domestically due to the oversupply," Afgri deputy managing director Dominic Sewela said.
Sewela said the shipment, leaving for Iran from Durban at the end of May, would probably be followed by another in June to the Middle East or to other African countries.
"We hope to initiate exports to African countries north of our borders where there is drought. Such exports will create a greater demand for South African maize and thus benefit the farmers by ensuring they get decent prices for their crop in South Africa," he said.

Sewela said the maize, in the form of ground meal, was sold to Iran via a trading entity.
Afgri Trading managing director Wouter Mentz in a statement said the company was acting as a primary exporter in the transaction, and the shipment would be the largest maize shipment to leave South Africa in one vessel since the 1999/2000 period.
The maize export programme was described as one of the more efficient mechanisms to alleviate the country's maize surplus. - Sapa
