Children attending a day care centre in Mamelodi East were paid a special visit by the United States Ambassador on Tuesday.
The Berakah Educational Foundation in Mahube Valley, an after-care centre for school- children from Meetse-a-Bophelo and Mahlasedi primary schools, hosted ambassador Eric Bost, who donated US$10 000 about(R75 000) to the foundation last year.
Avril Elkington, the founder of the centre, said they played a vital role in the children's lives by helping them with their school work and filling in for any shortfalls at school.
"Apart from a lunch, we offer literacy and maths classes as well as life skills, teaching them about values and how to work with money.

"We also offer various sports for them and we have a day care centre."
The foundation also has an income generating initiative where women make beaded lanyards which the embassy sells or gives as gifts to dignitaries.
Bost said that the project was important as it aided vulnerable and orphaned children. "This is a wonderful investment, ensuring that children can get a meal, training and can play with their friends in a safe environment."
Elkington said the donation had been used to buy more equipment, jungle gyms, chairs and tables and to pay volunteers.
