 Pope prays for monsoon victims in Mumbai

Vatican City - Pope Benedict XVI said on Thursday that he would pray for the more than 440 people killed in floods and landslides in western India.

"His Holiness Benedict XVI sends the assurance of his profound solidarity and pastoral concern, with fervent prayers that almighty God will grant eternal peace to those who have died," the Vatican said in a telegram, sent to Cardinal Ivan Dias, archbishop of Mumbai.

The telegram, signed by Vatican Secretary of State Angelo Sodano, added that the Pope was also praying for the injured and for those "engaged in the massive work of relief and rebuilding".
