An Atteridgeville city council employee was arrested on Thursday for allegedly illegally connecting electricity for residents of the Pomolong informal settlement, Pretoria police said.

Spokesperson Inspector Daniel Mavinmbela said the 43-year-old man was arrested after a resident laid a complaint.

"The man allegedly illegally connected electricity for a fee of R2 000. One resident then went to the city council to complain and found out that he did not even have an electricity account as he had a prepaid system," he said.

The man was expected to appear in the Atteridgeville magistrate's court on Friday. - Sapa
