Newly-appointed head of the priority crimes unit Anwa Dramat would have to make sure it acted without "fear or favour" in the fight against corruption, the Democratic Alliance said on Thursday.
"His test will now be to ensure that the new unit acts without fear or favour when confronting any form of criminality, but most especially corruption," said DA police spokesperson Dianne Kohler Barnard.
She said Dramat's major challenge would be to assert the unit's autonomy, which had been considerably reduced by locating it within the police.
Investigators of the unit, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, would be selected, supervised and funded by the police, which could undermine the fight against corruption in the police service itself.
